30 May Spoke Newsletter – 05/30/2019
It is time for the J and J program presentations – that is JAN HUDSON and JIM KNOX. These two fine Club members will each present a segment of today’s program. As stated in last week’s Spoke you will need to attend to see and hear Jan’s program – it will be well worth the price of admission. Jim will present a more traditional craft talk and will focus on his activities as one of the area’s top attorneys. We look forward to hearing from both these members.
Our members ED MORRISON and JACK BENNETT enthralled us with their stories of serving in our armed forces. Ed served as a Marine pilot for a number of years and seemed to have flown a wide variety of both prop and jet planes over his years of service. From Cherry Point North Carolina to Camp Pendleton Ed’s service was varied and interesting. Jack, after completing his medical education at Loma Linda University School of Medicine, served as a surgeon in the Army and spent time at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio and Fort Benning Georgia as well as South America. Jack as a paratrooper; let us know that the first step out of the plane is a long step. We thank both these Rotarians for their service to our country.
June 6, 2019 marks the 75th anniversary of D-Day. DON MCCUE will present a 75th anniversary program discussing the events of that memorable day. Utah Beach, Omaha Beach. Gold Beach, Juno Beach and Sword Beach were the locations were where troops from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Poland, New Zealand, Australia as well as other allied countries invaded Normandy in Operation Overlord. Don will guide us through the activities of that pivotal day. This promises to be an outstanding program.
UPDATES and ACTIVITES
Please remember to check with JIMMY N. to see if you can assist with our Club’s information booth at this Saturday’s Family Service Hunger Walk at the U of R. The time to volunteer is from about 7:00 am to 11:00 am.
The 2019 Redlands Bowl Summer Music Festival is about ready to kick off on Friday June 21 at 8:00 pm. Besides Executive Director BEV NOERR, under whose leadership the Bowl continues to bring exciting programs to Redlands, members JOE HORZEN and SAM EDISON serve on the Board of Directors. It should be noted that Rotarian spouses Char Burgess, Charles Marshall, Robin Maupin and Ellen Weisser also serve on the Board. Well done one and all. Remember to sign up to usher for the June 21 program. This year’s schedule of programs is outstanding.
It was great to see JANET GREENFIELD at last week’s meeting. It was also noted that RON HELBRON and RON JEFFREY did their best to answer last week’s optional birthday questions, but it just goes to show you that (in the spirit of Prez Joe) “two Rons don’t make a right”. JOE KIBLER reminded us to sign-up for the Touch –A – Truck event on June 8. Please Joe – next time you ask for assistance, keep you shirt on – this is a dignified group (huh). Also good news – Joe’s son is recovering from his recent illness.
Last, but certainly not least, Prez. Joe’s Demotion Party is still set for June 28 at VICTORIA MARSHALL’s beautiful home on Belmont St. in Redlands. This will be our chance to recognize Joe for his year as our Club’s President.
Last week before Touch-A-Truck! If you aren’t involved yet in this great event talk to JIM NOLIN to get involved now! Big thanks to all the folks on the Touch-A-Truck committee for all their hard work on this event! In case you need another reason to get involved in the event there is also a dunk tank where the fine folks of the community will be able to dunk yours truly, not that anyone in this club would be interested in such a thing….
