Last Week

TED ALEJANDRE, San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools, elected to office in 2014 and again in 2018 discussed the health and operational side of the district. He gave particular emphasis to the “School Dashboard” system that rated the various school districts throughout San Bernardino County and showed how it graded how each was doing. Good to find out Redlands Unified School District is green in all areas except absenteeism. He further discussed the use of the STEM System (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and how it helps to improve schools. In addition he discussed the AVID program (Advancement Via Individual Determination). Also joining us was Redlands Unified School Board Member Patty Holohan.

Today

University of Redlands Professor and Club member JACK OSBORN will have NICOLE NEIMAN present a program on her Rotary Global Grant Scholarship for the completion of her Masters of Public Health at York University in the United Kingdom. (I hope this club realizes just how great a job JACK does with the Rotary Scholar Program…he follows former professors like Paul Little, Henry Ditmar and Ralph Hone that made sure that Redlands was so very well represented in our district… truth is that the Rotary Club of Redlands (including Sunrise) has as many or more winning scholars as the rest of the district added together!)

Next Week

Our very own JIM NOLAN and the “Touch a Truck” This program has brought scholarship dollars to the club for several years now and a lot of fun to so many young and not so young citizens of the Inland Empire. Held at the University of Redlands Ted Runner Stadium, this year the event will be on June 8, 2019. A new addition this year will be the “ON LINE” sale of tickets.

COMMUNITY SERVICE DAY

Please save the morning of Saturday, April 27, 2019 for working with fellow Rotarians and literally thousands of other volunteers that will help make Redlands beautiful. PAT MEYER is again arranging our time and will have us using our administrative skills to manage students from the three high schools for a work project on Brookside Ave. Do not miss it!

APRIL FOOLS DAY

This year APRIL FOOLS DAY is much more than fun and jokes as it is the 99th Anniversary of the Rotary Club of Redlands. Seems hard to believe that so much time has passed, but when I consider that my tenure as a member is almost half that amount…we have made a great difference in our community! Keep up the good work, and when someone asks for help ushering, digging or reading, step up and be counted!

ALSO OF NOTE: April 1, 1918 Royal Air Force Founded April 4, 1949 NATO founded April 6, 1896 Modern Olympics founded April 19, 1776 was the first day of the American Revolution. RED WINE AND BREWS this year will be on May 11, 2019 from 4 to 7 in the evening at ESRI

More interesting is that this started as the Rotary Wine Tasting and developed into Red Wine and Blues and is now Red Wine and Brews…Please plan on attending or at least buying a couple of tickets. This is the major push by our club for scholarship funds.

USHERING AT THE BOWL

Please let MARVIN or JAN HUDSON know if you will be available on June 28, 2019 to help out at the Redlands Bowl. This will be opening night and we really need your help.

PRESIDENT’S COLUMN

I attended Yucaipa Rotary event this past weekend! I made me proud to be a Rotarian. It was great to see what other clubs do for their fundraising as well as what they do with the funds they raise! As the evening wore on I mentioned my membership in our amazing club and was made to feel even more welcome than they already had! Reflecting on the event it gave me new ideas for fundraising as well as service projects. I would encourage all members of our club to also visit other clubs to see what they do as well. Sometimes things that work are hard to see until they are right in front of you!
