LAST WEEK
We heard from LEE HARTLEY Operations Manager from Active Education. We learned of the “Gamification” work that Active Education does with school kids at recess, PE, and after-school camps. They cite being able to achieve improved positive behaviors and increased confidence in students through guided play. A few observers not familiar with foreign accents in their same language may have been wondering, “Why can’t the English learn to speak?”, as voiced by Professor HENRY HIGGINS, in reaction to ELIZA DOOLITTLE in My Fair Lady. Regardless, the passion and commitment that LEE and his colleagues have in their mission to make a positive difference was most evident throughout his interesting and animated presentation.
NEXT WEEK
We will host KEVIN DYERLY, Vice President of Enrollment, University of Redlands.
THE THIRD MONDAY IN FEBRUARY
The ‘official’ designation above by the State of California marks what is commonly referred to as “Presidents Day”. Since 1879 it has been the federal holiday honoring our Founding Father GEORGE WASHINGTON.
By 1758, as a respected military hero and large landowner, WASHINGTON held local offices and was elected to the Virginia provincial legislature. These elections were raucous events, with voters sometimes plied with alcoholic beverages and food by candidates. Per the prevailing custom, Washington‘s campaign arranged for food, rum, and wine to be provided for voters during his winning elections. There was clearly more than one way to chop the proverbial cherry tree!

PRESIDENTS MESSAGE
First, happy birthday to all of our February ROTARIANS! It’s been a rainy month for celebrations, but I hope you’ve all had (or will have) wonderful days. I’m also happy to announce that the Diamond Heist Mystery Dinner netted our Club just under $14,000, so thank you to all who came to the event and sponsored it! Now we’re on to our fine dining fundraiser, the Winemaker Dinner, so prepare yourself for a delicious evening and a big thank you to LYNN WHITMER for liaising the wines to be poured. It may be shocking to hear but I haven’t been to a wine dinner in some time, so I’m looking forward to it.
