TODAY

On September 29, 1979, Rotary volunteers administered drops of oral polio vaccine to children at a health center in Guadalupe Viejo, Makati, Philippines. Following this success, Rotary launched PolioPlus in 1985 and was a founding member of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in 1988. Through decades of commitment and work by Rotary and our partners, more than 2.5 billion children have received the oral polio vaccine. October 24th is World Polio Day, and we look forward to hearing a personal experience from PATTY LUGO, wife of SEAN LUGO. We appreciate PATTY being able to share her story with our club!

LAST WEEK

Big Bear Rotarian RICHARD SHAW made a very good case for the Rotary Youth Exchange Program. He spoke of how we can successfully identify exchange students to go to other countries and how to recruit families to host exchange students coming stateside. Each exchange term is for one year and brings a wealth of positive experiences for both the students and the hosts. More than 8,000 students participate each year across the globe. We currently have 5 youth exchange students in District 5330.

NEXT WEEK

Watching Star Trek, and dreaming of Tricorders, Transporters, and Warp drive planted the seeds of exploration that grew to a career path for next week’s speaker. MIKE YARTZOFF, an RHS grad and a Cal Poly Pomona grad, learned from experience that science is THE tool to take you from A to B when undertaking hard tasks. MIKE now finds himself living the dream and working at Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena.

A Mars Rover team member, he has been developing the Sampling Caching and Subsytstem for the engineering, design, and test for the prototype, ground support and flight hardware for the Mars Rover program. Can’t wait to hear about the places that no man has gone before!

CLUB CALENDAR

NOVEMBER 11TH – VETERANS DAY PARADE! Rotary will enter this year and honor our Vets! (Look for sign-ups for the Saturday parade)
DECEMBER 16TH – Burrage Mansion Christmas Drive-Thru

Next week we celebrate our October babies and test their knowledge of CHRIS ALVAREZ-Style Trivia Test. A Libra is known to crave balance and harmony. Compromise and charm are talents they possess. Can they talk their way out of fines? The Scorpios in the group will bring their determination to the table. Come and find out if Octo-babies can measure up. The September babies rocked it!

PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

What a weekend! I saw many familiar faces at the U of R’s homecoming, and of course, at Past Prez JEN DANIEL’S Oktoberfest! I’m pretty sure the regular attendees at Club were all at her party. And before the weekend, I hear that ERIC GRENIER had the students of Compact enthralled during the networking event at the Burrage Mansion – thank you for representing on such short notice and helping out! One of the things we need to consider as we move into the holiday seasons is…. what we would like to do for our holiday social?! A social holiday happy hour or a Holiday Bingo repeat? Let’s have a vote and find out! And remember, LYNN WHITMER will be seeking volunteers to represent ROTARY in the Veterans Day Parade. If you have a car that can be used, talk to her!
