TODAY

The program will be ROB CLIZBE and B.A.C.A. (Bikers Against Child Abuse). ROB will inform us how BACA fulfills that mission. He will also share how he got involved with BACA, as well as share some stories from the field.

LAST WEEK

We heard from BRANDI COLLATO, Chief Executive Officer, YMCA of the East Valley. Highlights of the presentation included a brief history of the overall organization, including that the YMCA was founded in London in 1844. We learned that the Redlands Y was founded in 1887, and is one of the oldest branches in the country. There are amenities too numerous to mention, and several branches. We also learned that Basketball was invented at the Y in 1891 in Springfield, MA by Canadian physical education instructor JAMES NAISMITH (picture below).

ON THIS DAY

In 1836, SAM HOUSTON was inaugurated as the first President of the Republic of Texas. One of the most colorful figures in American history, HOUSTON was an American general and statesman who played a prominent role in the Texas Revolution. Although too late to the Battle of Alamo, he subsequently defeated Mexican GENERAL SANTA ANA’s forces at the Battle of San Jacinto, leading to the capture of the General. This set the stage for Texan independence. HOUSTON served as the first and third president of the Republic of Texas and was one of the first two individuals to represent Texas in the United States Senate. He also served as the sixth governor of Tennessee and the seventh governor of Texas, the only individual to be elected governor of two different states in the United States.

WORLD POLIO DAY IS 24 OCTOBER

Polio was once one of the most feared diseases globally. A highly infectious disease with no cure, polio spread rapidly through communities and left devastation in its wake. Every year, thousands of children used to be killed and hundreds of thousands paralyzed. Today, thanks to global efforts of Rotary International, WHO, Gates Foundations, and hundreds of national and local public health organizations worldwide, polio cases are down 99.9%. With wild poliovirus restricted to just a few high-risk geographies, the world has an historic opportunity to stop virus transmission for good. Find out more at: https://makepoliohistory.org

PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

Greetings Rotarians, Autumn is in full swing, and so is our club’s energy! Do you know what is better than just a regular Thursday? A Thursday with fellow Rotarians at lunch! I’m still impressed by our club’s dedication to our scholarship initiatives for local students each year. As we gear up for our signature RON JEFFREY Winemaker Dinner at Hatfield Buick GMC, every ticket sold, every toast made, and every moment shared at this event helps us provide more scholarships to deserving students in our community. Ron’s vision continues to impact lives, and I’m proud to see our club carry forward this meaningful tradition year after year. Your participation makes all of this possible.
