Compact high school students assist disabled adults with Christmas shopping at Kmart

Twenty-five high school students from Redlands East Valley High School, Citrus Valley High School, and Redlands High School Compact Clubs helped forty-five disabled adults shop at Kmart in Redlands on November 22. For the last 8 years Dave Maupin has written a grant for Rotary to provide funds for this activity through a Friends of Rotary program to engage teens with disabled adults. Redlands Compact provides the training and motivation to help high school students plan for and obtain jobs that are part of a well-thought-out career progression. Part of this process is building character by having the students volunteer to do community service. Watching the teens and the adults, Norma Beckwith the Compact Club advisor at Redlands East Valley High School said, “This is beautiful. To see the interaction between the students and the adults is a win win.” She thinks the students benefit the most. Christian Engelsman a student from REV commented that this experience was good and enlightening. It reminded him of his family with 5 brothers and 5 sisters where nothing is ever boring. CVHS secretary for Compact and CVHS ASB president, Lindsay Burton, shopped with Tammy. When the bill came, they were over the $25.00 so she said it would be an honor to make up the difference. Saumya Goyla, REV Compact president, shopping with two adults said they taught her what compassion was when they bought for someone else.

Jeff and Kathy McNair, teachers of Light and Power a class at Trinity Church which includes adults with developmental disabilities, said that this was the best year ever. Kathy said that the high school kids were rock stars serving as personal shoppers and starting friendships. They have invited the students to attend the Light and Power annual prom with a classic western theme this year on April 17th.

After the shopping all were treated to pizza and sodas at Little Caesars in Kmart. The smiles, conversation, and laughter that surrounded everyone sharing what they purchased and who it was for made the event a huge success.
